I am a believer in the magic of snow tires.

But haven’t you seen/read consumer reports articles stating that snow tires aren’t as good as all seasons in cold weather unless you’re on actual snow...

M ultiple reports have said that. And I believe it. I also don’t want to switch between sets of tires in the freezing cold because the weather report was wrong.... If you get cold weather but get less than a dozen inches of snow over the course of a year? All season. If you regularly get 6-12" a week in winter? Snow tires.

They’re called Winter tires, not snow tires. They’re designed for temps from 7 degrees Celsius and below. You can also get different types of winter tires, some with tread designed for deep snow (usually have more than 10/32nds of tread depth) and others that provide traction without sacrificing dry and wet handling (Michelin X-ice Xi3, Continental Viking Contact/Winter contact Si, Pilot Alpin line from Michelin). If it doesn’t drop below 7, stick to all seasons , if it does, get winters, you’re one cold morning away from a bad black ice encounter.
